I haven’t posted anything in quite some time… have been busy with other social media avenues, to include SmugMug and Facebook… check them out here: http://backfromleave.smugmug.com/ and www.facebook.com/backfromleavephoto. Here’s a shot from the Hoover Dam bridge, officially called the Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. To get this shot, my camera with ultra-wide angle lens was mounted on the tripod, sticking out about 2′ beyond the side of the bridge and triggered with a wired remote.
17 Apr – D1GP @ Odaiba, Japan
Took a chance on the weather on Saturday and ventured out to Odaiba to try my hand at another drift event… there’s no better way to experience this piece of automotive history than in the country that the sport was born! The rain soaked my clothes and the cold chilled me to the bone, but the shooting opportunities were limitless… Playing with my newest gear had it’s drawbacks, as it turns out ‘weather-sealed’ doesn’t mean ‘waterproof’! Click on the image to go my Flickr and view the rest of the set.
3 Apr – Taipei from Above
Taipei from the 91st floor of Taipei 101. As shot on the 5th night of a 7-day trip to the homeland. Too bad I had to spend 4 of those days in a hospital ward enduring acute tonsillitis, but the hospitality was great! Hand-held and processed with LR4, Topaz DeNoise.
1 Apr – Sakura @ Shinjuku Gyoen
Enjoying the sunshine and alcohol-free pleasantry in the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, once the imperial gardens. This is just 1 of about 1,500 cherry trees (sakura) that blossom every late March/early April. What you don’t see underneath this tree are the throngs of Japanese with blue tarps, staking out prized picnic spots beneath the pink canopy of the sakura.
20 Mar – More from San Francisco

San Francisco – Palace of Fine Arts, a photo by Rob Shaw (BFL) on Flickr.

San Francisco – Lombard, a photo by Rob Shaw (BFL) on Flickr.

San Francisco – Skyline, a photo by Rob Shaw (BFL) on Flickr.

San Francisco – Cable Car, a photo by Rob Shaw (BFL) on Flickr.
The above were shot during a brisk drive to stop at most of the landmarks in SF late at night, mostly due to insomnia and poor planning (I mistakenly booked a hotel next to a raging hipster club. On a Friday night.) I made the best of it and did what I could to salvage these shots.
10 Mar – Ueno – After Class
Back in Japan, I ventured into Ueno Park to take a look at the surroundings on a recent day off. It was raining consistently all day and I enjoyed the textures, reflections, and mood that the water brought out of everything. I was inspired by the lighting workshop in LV and, in the coming months, I’m going to push myself out of my comfort zone and tackle something new with off-camera lighting. Don’t worry… the HDR shots are piling up and I’m sure that I’ll get back into HDR mode soon enough.
27 Feb – Golden Gate Closeup
I’ve been keeping pretty busy lately with flying on nasty airlines back and forth across the Pacific Ocean, taking me to wonderful photo opportunities. It was just me, the rental car, and my navigation traversing San Francisco on a gorgeous, crisp, clear Friday night during a recent one-night layover en route back to Japan… I had to capture the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Here, the North Tower looms large with the city in the background.
21 Feb – Location Lighting – LV
While on a day off during a recent convention in Las Vegas, I had the opportunity to attend location lighting demo organized by Moshe Zusman and sponsored by B&H Photo Video.
Using the new PW Plus III with Moshe Zusman, Becca Watkins, and Noah Hayes, along with their willing models on the LV Strip. Learned quite a bit about shooting manually with strobes at dusk… going to have to play around some more!
15 Feb – Yokohama, Reflected
Yokohama’s Minato Mirai area reflected in the waters near the Port of Yokohama. I wanted to convey the vibrancy of the area in this photo… it’s so alive with activity. This particular night, we froze our butts off while ice skating near the Red Brick Warehouse, took in the gorgeous views from the Sky Garden on the 69th floor of Landmark Tower, savored the delicious food in the Aeon food court, and waved goodbye to the ships as they left the port.
8 Feb – Mt Fuji Lightpainting
Lightpainting on the frozen shoreline of Lake Shoji, Japan… scene: family sitting in the car about 10 feet away with the heater at full blast, girls giggling at daddy shivering outside, me moving around erratically with my iphone flashlight app while shutter set to 30seconds at ISO200. Brrr…
